Al Newman, MN Twins 87’/91’ World Series Champion
joins Minnesota Baseball Academy in presenting
“Newmie Camps” 2010
Minnesota Baseball Academy has not only added a former great Major Leaguer to their staff, they are even luckier to have found someone who can hold the title of great teacher, motivator and mentor – Al Newman.

Starting in January at Minnesota Baseball Academy’s additional location in the Burnsville Field house, the Minnesota Twin’s Al Newman will be the lead instructor in all of our group lessons (mini camps) and camps in December and March.
The “Newmie Camps” are going to bring the quality of baseball instruction that MBA is committed to by offering players the ability to work with Al Newman and our staff on all the tools in baseball.
A little more on Al…
It is safe to say if you are a Minnesota Twins Fan then you know the name ‘Al Newman’. He is one of seven Twins who hold two World Series rings.

‘Newmie’ was traded to the Twins in 1987 for the most exciting five years in Minnesota Twins history. As a fleet footed and sure-handed defensive infielder, Newman was also a valuable utility player for the Twins. Al was a member of two World Championship teams in 1987 and 1991 Minnesota Twins. But that’s just part of what Newman wants to bring to the table with Minnesota Baseball Academy.
“I appreciate the fact that I'm recognized for being part of the'87 & '91 World Series Champions and also for coaching the Minnesota Twins,” Al said. “But I'll be honest with you, what I really want to be known for is what I'm doing for others.”
His modesty and good-natured attitude will continue to bring the Academy’s goal of having fun while learning the game of baseball. And while learning the game is important, Newman wants to bring his experience of being a mentor to all the players.
“Obviously, I love baseball and my passion is coaching but a big part of it is teaching these kids about life,” Newman stated. “I always stress the importance of being a role model and getting a good education. Minnesota Baseball Academy has a well-established program with team guidelines that I believe in.”
“I’m proud to be on-board with Minnesota Baseball Academy and am looking forward to getting going,” Newman said. “You guys at the Academy have a heart for baseball and kids just like I do!” Newman elated. “There is a lot of synergy in working together – I just hope the players have as much fun as we do.”
Something tells us they will.

A little more on Al Newman…
Newman’s most productive season came in 1989 when he posted career-highs in stolen bases (25), hits (113), doubles (18), runs batted in (38), runs (62) and batting average (.253). He also played for the Rangers in 1992, his last major league year as a player.
Following his playing career, he pursued that passion for coaching when he managed and coached for Minnesota (93-05) and in 2006 became an advanced scout with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Whether playing or coaching, Al’s bubbly personality brought a lot of energy to all the clubhouses with his big smile, constant laughter and a positive attitude.
You’ve seen him on TV, Post Season pre-game and post game shows. You’ve heard his voice on KFAN, WCCO, KKMS, and many other stations. Now you can hear him weekly on Sunday nights on “The Al Newman Show” at 6 p.m. on AM 1280 the Patriot. The show will cover Minnesota Sports and highlight high school athletes. You’ll also hear about Newmie Rewards LLC, fundraising programs that are unique and profitable for any organization. |
